Hale Centre Theatre

Project Description

Wasatch Electric provided a range of electrical construction solutions for the Hale Centre Theatre at the Mountain American Performing Arts Center in Salt Lake City, UT.

The 122,300-square-foot theatre features two stages – the 467-seat Jewel Box Theatre and the 900-seat, theatre-in-the-round Centre Stage Theatre. Stage is an extremely technologically advanced venue, with a 120-plus motors and multiple control locations that allow the stage to be raised, lowered, and moved in a variety of intricate motions.

Moreover, stage motion control is electrically coupled with an actor and object gantry crane flying system.  Additionally, the large back stage area has multiple dressing rooms, green rooms, kitchenette, set piece storage areas as well as staff offices, control and dimming rooms, and an enormous fly loft loading area.

Scope of Work

Wasatch Electric’s scope of work for this project included all aspects of electrical and fire alarm as well as security, telecommunication, data, and dimming. The complex project was fully BIM coordinated by our in-house team.

Features of the theatre’s electrical service include:

  • 2,500-kV-ampere transformer
  • 400-amp main switch board
  • 350-kW generator for backup power
  • 15 switchboards
  • 40 panelboards
  • Ten transformers
  • Two automatic transfer switch (ATS) units
  • 2,400 light fixtures, including several custom built, one-of-a-kind fixtures
  • DMX lighting control panels
  • Hundreds of thousands of feet of cabling for power, lighting, moving stage equipment, and theatrical lighting systems

Additionally, our team performed all electrical work associated with the Cairns Plaza which surrounds the building’s east entrance.

This project’s scope of work included DMX-controlled landscape lighting, lighted handrails, and power and lighting for two large water features.

Unique Attributes

An outstanding feat of electrical and mechanical engineering, the 80-ton Centre Stage can support eight feet of water while spinning, raising, and lowering with accompanying fly systems.  The systems consist of a center column lift, four quad lifts, two large crescent lifts, two slip stages and two overhead gantry crane trolleys.

The theatre also includes LED façade lighting fixtures that wrap around cove exterior spaces, custom-made exterior entrance fixtures, and six dazzling crystal chandeliers in the lobby.

Another unique feature is the view glass on the exterior windows, which use an electrical control system for tinting.
